Pai Gow Poker is a great table game option for poker
fans. It combines features of Texas hold'em and five-card draw in a table
game format. In Pai Gow Poker, players play against the House (or a
predetermined banker) rather than one another.
In Pai Gow Poker you are going to have a bit of a different game. The first
thing you should know is that you don't get to trade out your hands. The
cards you get in the deal are what you are stuck with. This takes away from
any known poker strategy that you could have. In most poker games you play
against the other players the table where you are able to bluff or trade in
cards. In some cases there is even a board in which you can make a poker
hand. For Pai Gow you are working off of dice as well as cards.
Even though pai gow poker may look complicated to the uninitiated, it is
actually not that hard. And if you know how to play poker, well then you are
halfway there. The strength of your hand is calculated the same way as it is
in poker, but you won't find anyone trying to bluff you at a pai gow poker
table.
Many people confuse pai gow poker with the Chinese domino game Pai Gow. You
can actually play the Chinese version in many Asian casinos, but in the
western world, when people are talking about pai gow they mostly mean the
pai gow poker game. Pai gow poker is sometimes also called "double-handed
poker" and the game is only loosely based on the Asian domino game.
The rules for how to play Pai Gow are similar to straight poker as far as
winning hands go, but game play is somewhat different. You should first know
that Pai Gow is played with 53 cards--the standard 52-card deck, plus one
joker. This makes five-of-a-kind a possibility in Pai Gow poker. In standard
poker, the highest possible hand is a Royal Flush (five cards of the same
suit in sequential order from Ten to Ace); however, a five-of-a-kind will
beat a Royal Flush. Also, the next-highest hand beneath a Royal Flush is a
straight flush from Ace to Five. One of the most exciting aspects of how to
play Pai Gow is the possibility of getting five-of-a-kind.
Another difference in how to play Pai Gow is that all seven cards are used
to determine winnings. In Pai Gow, the dealer plays against the other
players. To begin the game, each player puts up a stake. Then, seven cards
are dealt face-down to each player. After the deal, each player other than
the dealer picks up their cards and arranges them into a five-card hand and
a two-card hand.
