To many professional, hardcore poker players, Five-card
stud is the ultimate psychological showdown. That’s because there is very
little to hide in Five-card stud – essentially, four fifth’s of your hand is
out there for everyone to see.
Unlike Six-card stud or Seven-card stud, Five-Card stud uses only five
cards. Also, unlike other games (like Five-card draw), there is no replacing
of cards, nor are there any community cards. You get a five card hand, and
that’s it – no improving it, and no taking your “five best”. You bet on the
strength of your hand.
Five-card stud begins with an ante, and then one face down card and face up
card are dealt to each player. Each player looks at his or her face down
card (if they so choose, but it would be silly not to) and a round of
betting commences. Then three more face up cards are dealt, each with a
round of betting afterwards.
Hence, the draw poker rules became the initial basis for other poker game
rules. In the five-card draw poker, players are dealt 5 cards at first, and
may put aside any of them in an attempt to get a better hand. In spite of
the fact that such rules have originally been used in poker game, and draw
poker is considered to be the forefather of all other poker games, these
rules are not often applied in casinos nowadays. Today, a draw poker
players' main aim is to build a hand of five cards. That is why it is also
called the 'five card draw poker.'
Here are some tips that you can use right from the time you begin to even
play this game of five card draw:
- Keep a close watch on your opponents: If you ever want to judge your
opponents game skills, it is best to check the number of cards he draws.
- Do not chase Straights or Flushes: When you are playing a five card game
you should never make the mistake of chasing either an inside straight or a
three card flush.
- Learn how your opponents play: It is vital that you know your opponents,
learn to distinguish between the tight and loose players; this will help you
when you make a decision. A good e.g. is that if you find a tight player
betting huge after any draw, the chances are that the player hits a draw and
this should make you fold. Once you know how your opponents play and act,
half your battle is won.
